ACES Wintergreen Interdistrict Magnet School Hosts Legislative Breakfast

February 17th, 2017

On Thursday, February 16, ACES Wintergreen Interdistrict Magnet School (WIMS) hosted a legislative breakfast. The purpose of the breakfast was to better acquaint area legislators with ACES WIMS and to discuss the value of sustained support to our magnet schools. Brendan Sharkey, former Speaker of the Connecticut House of Representatives moderated the event that was attended by close to 100 ACES WIMS families and staff members. State Senator George S. Logan, Representative Michael D’Agostino, and Representative Josh Elliott participated in the breakfast. Several parents and alumni also spoke. Magnet schools across the state of Connecticut sustained a 6.55 percent cut in state funding this year. Parents and districts alike are reaching out to their legislators in support of sustained funding for magnet schools.

"Magnet schools in general allow for families to choose schools that appeal most to their child’s academic interests and talents. In this day and age of technology, and with the speed at which technology affects our everyday lives, I am proud that WIMS is and remains a technology leader by distributing to each student from grades K – 8th with their own iPad or Chromebook! These devices bridge the gap between education and the technological world in which we live today AND enhance our students overall learning," shared Alexandra Lee-Dicks, an ACES Wintergreen Interdistrict Magnet School parent. In addition to the legislative breakfast, ACES Wintergreen Interdistrict School along with ACES Thomas Edison Middle School and ACES Educational Center for the Arts testified at the State’s Education Appropriations Hearing on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2017.
