School Nurses care for kidsThe Wintergreen Interdistrict Magnet School health office is staffed with a full time nurse and a part time nurse who are responsible for maintaining the health records, state- mandated screenings, and assessments of health complaints or injuries, etc. The nurse is available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Please feel free to call to discuss any health concerns that may affect your child's ability to participate in school.

Mandatory Examinations, Immunizations

State-mandated physical examinations and immunizations are required to enter kindergarten and grade seven. A blue physical form will be provided as needed for your health care provider to complete.

Health Screenings

Many students will be screened for vision, posture, and hearing during the year. Advance written notice will be given.

Medications

All medications administered at school must be done in the health office and require a medication authorization form signed by a health care provider and a parent. An adult must bring the medication to the school in its original labeled container, including over-the-counter medications such as Motrin, Advil, Tylenol and Benadryl. Students can carry medication in school ONLY with special permission.

Asthma

Students with an active diagnosis of asthma (i.e. requiring asthma medication within the past year) should have a medication authorization for a quick-relief inhaler or nebulizer (for example- Albuterol), their own medication, and a spacer stored in the health office. An “asthma action plan” completed by the health care provider is also requested.

Food Allergies or Bee Sting Allergies

Any student with a known history of a severe or anaphylactic reaction needs to have a medication authorization and an emergency allergy plan completed by the health care provider.  Please call so I can discuss this with you.

Illness

  • Please do not send your student to school if he/she is vomiting, having diarrhea and/or has a temperature of 100 F or higher. They can return to school if they no longer have these symptoms for 24 hours.
  • Please consider giving the student a pain reliever (Tylenol or Ibuprofen) prior to sending them to school if needed.
  • Many students complain of headache, stomachache, sore throat, and stuffy nose. These symptoms are often due to the common cold or seasonal allergies.  Please encourage your student to drink extra fluids (water), eat breakfast, and get a good night’s rest. Unless the student has an elevated temperature, I do not typically request that they go home early.

Injury

If the student is unable to participate in Physical Education class due to an injury, please provide a health care provider’s note indicating the type and length of restriction. Also, a medical note is required if your child needs crutches, splints, slings, ace wraps, etc., in school.

Emergency Numbers

Please update the school of your home, work, and/ or cell phone numbers as needed. If you or your health care provider have any questions please contact the Health Office at (203) 281-9668, ext. 11146
