On Friday April 6, 2018, students performed in the one-act musical, Once on This Island. The play and lyrics were written by Lynn Ahrens and music was by Stephen Flaherty. Our production was directed by Lynne Patnode. Eric Carson served as Technical Director . Amy McCarthy acted as the Set Designer and Costume Designer. Nicole Flaherty and Nancy Barbosa were prop masters and stage crew. It was quite evident that staff and students had been working for months to put the production together. A terrific time was had by all !

On Friday February 16, 2018, WHE/WHW & CREATE held their 6th annual Pinewood Derby. More than 50 cars from 20 classrooms were entered into the races. Students worked in teams for more than 3 weeks to get their cars ready to race. As a team member, students needed to sand their cars, come up with an idea for their car’s design that all members of the team approved, decorate their cars, assemble their cars, and of course, make sure their cars got as close to the 5.0 oz weight limit standard as they could. Cars were weighed and re-weighed until team members were satisfied with their final product. On race day, we welcomed judges to come and pass out awards to all classrooms. Some of the categories were: Best in Show, Most Creative, and Most Aerodynamic. Bill Jacobs welcomed the crowd and thanked the Education Foundation for their generous grant that made this event possible. Julian Roman acted as emcee for the event. We began the races with some fun races : Dunkin Donuts vs. Chinese Food, Good vs. Evil, Safari animals vs. Teddy Bears, Christmas Spirit vs. The Grinch…..Once the fun races were done, it was time to get to the real race action. Every car that entered the races and met race criteria, was sent down the track 2 times. Our pit crew worked tirelessly to keep track of the data and record what place each car made on each run. Once the cars completed their first 2 heats, the pit crew averaged their standings and then placed them into their proper Elimination Rounds category ( either racing for 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place or last place based on their average). Cars then competed for the prize in their Elimination Round category. The winning cars were as follows: 1st place- Room 206’s Traffic Stop, 2nd place- Room 504’s Hot Rod, 3rd place- Room 217’s Golf Pro, and Last Place- Room 213’s Cavaliers. Staff, students, and guests had a wonderful time !
