The Wintergreen Interdistrict Media Center is a warm, inviting, multi-purpose space boasting two teaching areas, study carrels, a comfortable seating area for reading, and a twenty-five station computer lab. The media center has over 250 ebooks that can be accessed and viewed on school computers, home computers, as well as personal ereader devices. Additionally, there are several ebook reference resources available for upper level students to use. Our subscription databases include Britannica Online School Edition and Britannica Image Quest Library, as well as World Book Kids and World Book Student.
Students of all grades come to the library at designated times to partake in book exchange for personal and aesthetic growth. Primary and Intermediate Academy learners attend weekly information literacy classes on a fixed schedule; whereas students in the Junior Academy classes receive this vital instruction on a flexible schedule to coincide with various classroom units of study. At Wintergreen, information literacy knowledge and skills are integrated with the technology curriculum. Lessons and units focusing on locating, accessing, evaluating, synthesizing and using information effectively and efficiently are collaboratively formulated by teachers using an interdisciplinary approach. Students are then given opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills through authentic performance based learning tasks that are project or problem based. In this way, essential 21st Century teaching and learning components such as team work, critical thinking, problem solving and decision making are emphasized and practiced to maximize students’ preparedness for functioning in our ever increasing technological as well as global society.
