The ECA Music Department offers high school musicians immersion in a rigorous, comprehensive music curriculum, that includes academic coursework in multiple levels of music theory, musicianship, composition, and instrumental/vocal technique, as well as experience in both small and large performing ensembles whose repertoire spans numerous genres and styles.  ECA’s unique focus on collaborative work between young musicians and practicing artists establishes a pre-professional environment that requires focus, commitment, and responsibility, and nurtures the development of technical skill and artistry.  The ECA program is enlarged and infused by partnerships with arts organizations, visiting artist programs, and performance opportunities, as well as collaborative projects with students and artists of other artistic disciplines at ECA.

ECA Music Review

ECA's Alexa LaBaw is an NHSO Young Composer!

The New Haven Symphony Orchestra's Young Composers Program is an exciting and rare opportunity for selected high school students to study side-by-side with professional composers. A two-year program focusing on theory and composition grants these students access to NHSO musicians and one of America’s foremost composers. Students participate in group and individual lessons, compose new works, and have their pieces premiered by NHSO musicians.

ECA student musicians have been working with ECA alumni, singer-songwriter, and contestant on The Voice, Blessing Offor, in a series of three song writing workshops this spring. These workshops are one part of the Music Department’s annual New Music Festival. The theme of this, the 10th annual festival, is ‘The Power of Two.’ Through this theme, students are exploring the creative power generated when two artists come together to create work. Students have also workshopped original pieces with percussionist Jeff Stern, and will do so again with the professional ensemble, The Passepartout Duo, on May 18. Student composers, ensembles, and professional musicians will share new works at the New Music New Sounds concert on Wednesday, May 18, at 6:30 pm.

The Music Department Tuesday Talk mini-concert series will soon feature Sam Suggs, professional bassist, and also Daniel Bernard Roumain, hip-hop violinist, brought to us by the NHSO.
