Student Enrollment: 722 Students in Grades 6-8
Thomas Edison Middle School (TEMS) is an interdistrict magnet school where grades 6 – 8 students focus on Science, Mathematics and Technology. Our mission is to empower teachers and students to use technology effectively in order to become knowledgeable, capable, and ethical digital citizens. By developing strong digital and 21st century skills within our school environment our teachers and students will be ready to work with the global environment in a safe and comfortable way.
The curriculum is based on the Understanding by Design© model and allows both students and teachers to be inquiry-based learners and instructors in a constructivist setting. Technology is an integral part of every aspect of the school. Administration and staff are professionally committed to providing the highest level of instruction to the students. Thomas Edison Middle School is dedicated to fostering an educational atmosphere that connects with a diverse community of learners where each member is recognized as an important piece of the whole.
TEMS facilities include a state of the art multimedia production studio that provides teachers and students with the potential to experience the optimal instructional impact of cutting edge technology. Students and teachers, as well as the community at large, are afforded opportunities to communicate through a variety of media.
Laptop Computer for Every Student
One-2-One Computing, an initiative that began in the fall of 2004, has provided each student and teacher at the school with a laptop computer. The laptops combine a variety of educational resources which benefit students and teachers by allowing access to the most current data available. Students visit different global sites, and instructors employ the internet as a tool of inquiry to expand on lessons and curriculum units. There is greater adaptability of instruction for students with special needs. A “Tech Team” of technicians, students, teachers, administrators, and an educational technologist help to ensure the consistent and ongoing use of technology in order to enhance learning in all areas and at all levels.
ACES facilitates the curriculum planning and ultimately the day-to-day operation at Thomas Edison Middle School. ACES has a long history of successfully running magnet and special education schools in the South Central region of Connecticut.
